Artist working in a workshop

About Me

I'm Ryan McBee, an artist and illustrator based in the Monterey Bay in California.

I’ve been an artist as far back as I can remember. I was born and (mostly) grew up in the East Bay of California, adorning every piece of paper, school book, or official correspondence with doodles and scribbles.

I did the sensible thing and went to college for science but couldn’t stop myself from focusing on art and instead earned my BFA from UCSC, focusing on drawing and the figure.

I spent a long period not making as much as art as I wanted to but found my way back to myself as the artist that I’ve always been.

I live in the Santa Cruz mountains now and make as much art as possible while raising my family and holding down a day-job (for the time being lol).

I mostly make drawings, watercolors, digital pieces, and occasionally a sculpture.

My interests include comics and graphic illustrations, classical and contemporary art, mythology and folklore, cartoons, and fantasy and sci-fi stories.

I like to make work that focuses on queer bodies and fantastical narratives, and it’s even better when I can bring the two together.

My current focus is on creating narrative structure within singular illustrations while developing my style.
